2014 One to Watch| ‘Belle’ – A period film directed by Amma Asante

We're really looking forward to the release of the Amma Asante directed 'Belle' – a period film based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, an illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral who is raised by her aristocratic great-uncle. The film follows the story of Dido who did her part to push the empire one step closer to the abolition of slavery. Check out the trailer above – the film is scheduled for US release in May and in the UK in June.  

Starring: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, Matthew Goode, Tom Felton and Miranda Richardson, 

About the director:

Amma Asante was born in London and began her career as an actor before writing for television. She created the series Brothers and Sisters and made her feature directorial debut with A Way of Life (04), which screened at the Festival and also won the BAFTA Carl Foreman Award for special achievement by a first-time writer-director. Belle (13) is her latest feature.
