The British Film Institute has created a new title of head of diversity, with Jennifer Smith appointed to the role.

As head of diversity, Smith — who joins from a provider of social housing — will be responsible for overseeing diversity and inclusion across all BFI activities, including the organisation's Diversity Standards, a series of checks in place to ensure funding that has since been adopted by Film4 and BAFTA. She will also help build and implement new partnerships and programs and work closely with the government and across the film and screen industries, in front of and behind the camera.

“Lack of diversity and representation remain burning issues for the film and wider screen industries and I’m thrilled to be joining the BFI at a pivotal moment where we have a real opportunity to drive meaningful and lasting change." said Smith.

Added BFI CEO Amanda Nevill: “Diversity and inclusion is such an important focus of the BFI’s overall activity, and we needed someone very special to fill this new role. We are delighted to welcome Jen, who brings a wealth of experience and a track record of motivating change.”
