This week saw Charlie Brooker preview episodes from the new series of Black Mirror, which is set to premiere on Netflix on 21st October.

Produced by House of Tomorrow, the anthology series features 12 stand-alone episodes telling suspenseful tales exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia, reflecting our 21st Century anxieties. The series has been recognized with an international Emmy Award, and a Peabody Award, and been nominated for a Bafta award. Annabel Jones serves alongside Brooker as executive producer and showrunner.

Brooker said: “It’s all very exciting — a whole new bunch of ‘Black Mirror’ episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable. Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that ‘Black Mirror’ feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true.”

“Charlie has created a one-of-a-kind series with an uncanny voice and prescient, darkly comedic vision. We’re tremendously proud to bring Black Mirror to our members as a Netflix original series,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, original content, Netflix.

Netflix will release the first 6 episodes in October, with the rest following in 2017. The first batch includes:

  • Nosedive starring James Norton, opposite Bryce Dallas Howard and Alice Eve, directed by Joe Wright, and co-written by Rashida Jones. Inspired by our current obsession with ratings, this heightened satire is set in a world where each person is tagged with a numerical rating that can fluctuate by the minute.

  • Set in California in 1987, San Junipero will star Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis as two new arrivals experiencing a summer in the fun-loving beach town synonymous with sun, surf, and sex.

  • Shut Up and Dance  – when withdrawn 19-year- old Kenny (Alex Lawther) stumbles headlong into an online trap, he is quickly forced into an uneasy alliance with shifty Hector (Jerome Flynn) – both of them at the mercy of persons unknown.

  • In Men Against Fire future soldiers Stripe (Malachi Kirby) and Raiman (Madeline Brewer) must protect frightened villagers from an infestation of vicious feral mutants. Technologically, they have the edge, but will that help them survive?

  • Hated in the Nation – in near-future London, police detective Karin Parke (Kelly Macdonald) and her tech-savvy sidekick Blue (Faye Marsay) investigate a string of mysterious deaths with a sinister link to social media.

  • In Playtest, thrill-seeking globetrotter Cooper (Wyatt Russell) visits Britain, hooks up with Sonja (Hannah John-Kamen) and tests a video game so advanced, it’s terrifying. Also stars Wunmi Mosaku
