Hot on the heels of Zeebox, Orange have launched TVcheck, a social TV app that provides a new and exciting way to enhance the live TV experience complete with social and gaming elements. It is free to use on any network and works with 25 free-to-air channels in the UK, including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.
One of TVcheck's features is its unique live TV image recognition technology. During any programme on a compatible channel, viewers can simply point their phone at the television screen and the app will recognise the television programme. It then registers that the user has 'checked in' to the programme and allows them to participate in live quizzes, earn badges or challenge other viewers to become 'top dog' of a specific programme or channel. Additionally, the app provides allows the user to connect to social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter so that they can chat and send messages about their favourite programmes while watching TV. Upcoming developments include the user gaining access to other features such as unseen footage from their favourite shows.
The app, available in the future, on other apps stores including Android Market Place follows its successful release in France last year.
