Older people are increasingly likely to catch-up on their favourite shows using a PVR box rather than a laptop, according to a study by Deloitte. Over a third of viewers of on-demand content aged 16-34 said they used other on-demand services in comparison to using a PVR, research from Deloitte found. While the majority of on-demand viewing continues to take place on laptops the trend for older audiences to use PVRs for catch-up viewing has led to more on-demand viewing taking place on TVs.
When respondents were asked how much they use catch-up or other on demand services in comparison to a PVR 38% of 19-24 year olds indicated they used other services more.
Those using a laptop to watch on-demand services were:
- 69% of 16-18s
- 64% of 19-24s
- 48% of 25-34s
Paul Lee director, technology, media and telecommunications at Deloitte said that the tendency for younger people to use laptops because they have a greater tolerance of experimentation: “It may be that they are using on-demand because it gives them the autonomy over what they watch. They are more likely to have computers and use them regularly and more likely to be tolerant and using computers on demand”, he explained.
Overall 47% of the sample said they were often watching on computers in comparison to 36% who said they were watching on using a TV connected to a PVR, blue ray player or games console or a simple connected TV.
The study is based on a sample of 4,000 people and also found that 70% of households have the capability of connecting their TV to the internet through laptops, mobile phones, tablets, blue-ray players and games consoles.
Full results of the study will be revealed at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
