Michaela Coel and Marcus Rutherford have both been nominated for the Most Promising Newcomer gong at the British Independent Film Awards. Coel won the nod for her role in Been So Long where she plays Simone, a dedicated single mother who, on a rare night on the town is charmed by a handsome yet troubled stranger, Raymond (Arinzé Kene), igniting old and new feelings. Coel has also recently starred in BBC’s Black Earth Rising, a performance which has won critical acclaim. Rutherford plays Leon in Obey, a young man living in a time of violent social unrest on the estates of East London, whose world is torn apart by love for a girl from a different place. Fun fact – Rutherford discovered acting through Shane Meadows-affiliated drama non-profit The Television Workshop, an organisation that has produced actors such as Vicky McClure, Jack O'Connell and Samantha Morton.
