Now this is an exciting event! On Thursday 9th November, B3 Media are bringing together independent producer Effie T Brown (Dear White People, Real Women Have Curves) and director/ writer/ producer Nelson George (The Get Down, A Ballerina’s Tale) for an intimate discussion at London’s Ritzy Pitcurehouse. With accolades from the Sundance Film Festival, the Golden Globes, the Emmys and more, these two pioneers of black independent cinema will discuss their careers, the new wave of black cinema and finding your voice as a filmmaker while staying true to your vision.

Effie T. Brown is an award winning film and television Producer, known for her highly acclaimed, multi-platform repertoire as well as championing inclusion and diversity in Hollywood, both behind and in front of the camera. Through her company, Duly Noted Inc., Brown has produced several critically acclaimed HBO Films and award winning projects including Stranger Inside, Jane Campion’s in the Cut, Real Women Have Curves, Everyday People and Rocket Science. In 2014, Brown produced the critically acclaimed independent film Dear White People that went on to win numerous awards including the Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize for Breakthrough Talent. With a love of multiple platforms Brown focused on digital episodic content and produced over 130 episodes of WIGS, an award winning, original content channel funded by Google/YouTube. In 2015, Brown joined Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as Producer and Mentor in the controversial reboot of Project Greenlight. Brown joined Lee Daniels Entertainment in 2016 to Executive Produce Season 1 of the hit series Star on FOX. In keeping with her commitment to inclusive and diverse content Effie is currently on board as the Executive Producer of Disney Channel’s Zombies, coming out in 2018. The high school musical delivers an inspirational story about tolerance, inclusion, individuality and conviction but with zombies.

 

Nelson George is an author, filmmaker, television producer, and critic with a long career in analysing and presenting the diverse elements of African-American culture. Queen Latifah won the Golden Globe for playing the lead in his directorial debut, the HBO movie Life Support, the critically acclaimed drama looked at the effects of HIV on a troubled black family in his native Brooklyn, New York. He recently co-edited, with Alan Leeds, The James Brown Reader (Plume), a collection of previously published articles about the Godfather of Soul that date as far back the late ‘50s. Plume published the book in May ‘08. Nelson has been on a roll since 2013 with completed documentary projects: VH1’s Rock Docs, Finding The Funk, Showtime’s Brooklyn Boheme (which was supported by Kickstarter), ESPN’s The Announcement, the short All Hail the Beat, for the Focus Forward campaign. He hopes to continue that success with A Ballerina’s Tale; the much-anticipated, behind-the-curtain documentary about the daily routine of Misty Copeland, the first African-American female soloist at New York’s American Ballet Theatre in two decades. He is also Executive Producer and co-writer on the highly successful Netflix series The Get Down, created by director Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby) and Pulitzer-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis.
