Great British Bake Off contestant Dr Tamal Ray is to front a health pilot from Love Productions as Channel 4 expands its populist investigative slate.
Ray will appear alongside Food Unwrapped presenter Kate Quilton on Be Your Own Doctor (w/t). The show will focus on what people can do to keep healthy and why so many people no longer go to the doctor as the first port of call for medical advice.
Quilton will also front a second series of Tricks of the Restaurant Trade. Betty’s four-part series will advise consumers on what to look out for when they eat out and reveal the techniques employed by restaurants to make customers spend more. The debut four-part run aired in January to 1.8m (7.9%).
Separately Firecrest Films has been commissioned to make 2 x 60-minute programme Secrets of Our Favourite Foods (w/t). The factual producer, which has produced a string of Dispatches films, will follow restauranteur and presenter Simon Rimmer as he revisits classic British favourites from Angel Delight to Babycham.
Nicole Kleeman’s Glasgow-based indie has also secured a recommission for Supershoppers. The six part consumer programme and hour-long Christmas special will combine features and investigative journalism as it examines how retailing, marketing and branding influencing shopping habits.
Head of news and current affairs at C4 Dorothy Byrne said: “All four of these series concepts bring together the best of populist investigative journalism and features programmes which reflect people’s everyday lives.”
