Modern Tales is a five month story and professional development initiative created by Bushfire Digital and Script Cube for emerging BAME, female and disabled filmmakers. The programme supports writers, directors and producers in the development of long form dramatic fiction that is both market conscious and creative in its inception, set-up, development and execution. Modern Tales is supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, with BFI’s Film Forever National Lottery funds.

Modern Tales will enhance filmmakers' ability to exploit the opportunities that the new processes and new forms of storytelling present in the digital age. The training programme up-skills diverse filmmakers and filmmaking teams with entrepreneurial strategies and encourages ways to reconceive approaches to storytelling. Firstly, it will provide a deeper understanding of the core principles of dramatic storytelling and development. The programme will then ally this to a new awareness of the interdependent contexts of creative, entrepreneurial and data driven production and dissemination of fictional storytelling. The result: participants will gain significant competitive advantages in the changing digital media industry landscape.

Modern Tales offers full bursary support for up to 10 teams applying for project development – these teams should be made up of a writer, director (or writer/director) and producer. For these selected teams, access to the course will be completely free. The 8 course days form the backbone of your project’s development; in the two week period between each course day, the teams will be required to perform creative development exercises as directed by their course tutors to continue the progression of your projects. Project development will be further supported through monthly meetings with the course tutors as well as feedback from selected industry experts and your peer community provided in the form of online support for each project’s development.
